This is my M.O. in this blog for writing political language, holiday edition at this time of year, but this year I would like to change.

For those who hate change or have hives that the change is happening, I'll pause here so you can read something else or find the antihistamines.

At best? Good.

In this year, when many of us ask our families, "Who wants to get together for Thanksgiving?" I want to share some thoughts with you in this regard.

I know where you live may be different from where I live, and I know your family dynamic will be different from mine, so the first thing we need to sort out is the issue. Who is meeting for Thanksgiving? This is an important question to ask because none of us want to make anyone else sick, nor want to miss our family's Thanksgiving traditions.

You need to make sure that you and your family discuss it. Have an honest conversation about who wants to reunite and who wants to unsubscribe this year. If you can't get your whole family together the way you want this year, be sure to include ways to visit together in your plans. You can have a zoom call or a FaceTime group. You are allowed to drop by and say hello remotely if you need to. Either way, make sure you and your family connect in the best possible way for Thanksgiving. Either way, make it happen.

Please make it happen.

Now that it's no longer the case, I'd like to continue with this article and give you three reasons why your Thanksgiving Family Dinner is better than an insurance policy.

There is always someone to laugh about.

It is important to laugh. I once read in a book that laughter works as well as medicine. It's one of those years when people haven't laughed enough. Most of us still think we can't watch the Peanuts specials this year because Apple TV owns the rights to those shows and we're not sure if we can access them. Some of us don't know which Apple TV channel is streaming on.

If your family is like mine, and I can't imagine it isn't, there are people who invite you to the Thanksgiving family reunion just because they make you laugh. There are many reasons to invite the person who makes you laugh. OK, most of them revolve around making you laugh. Okay, this is about making you laugh.
  • Some people make you laugh because they can't help but say and do things that are inherently funny. Your mom usually sues you for making fun of them, but you have to admit it, mom. It was fun.
  • Some people make you laugh because you know they'll say something will appeal to your uncle and when he leaves, it's a one-way ticket to Funny Town. You know, you have this cousin who is super liberal and this uncle who is super conservative. Without a doubt, these conversations are too funny to miss. And your mom will make you laugh, which is even funnier. It's a funny two for one.
  • Some people make you laugh because they are just the life of the party by nature. They live to make people laugh. You'll never get in trouble here, but you still have to laugh, so it's definitely worth inviting her over.

You cannot take out an insurance policy

Even though I use the term digest to refer to the separation of an insurance policy, that doesn't mean I'm actually eating the thing. I guess eating a paper insurance policy has no nutritional value, let alone the ink on it, maybe it's just something that will kill you. It's even less nutritious if you buy your insurance policy, like most people, electronically (in fact, most retail customers probably can't remember the last time they got it, so there is that.

Meanwhile, there are so many great things to eat at the Thanksgiving table. I don't know what your family does, but mine can eat. Here is an example of the things we often see on our Thanksgiving table.
  • We usually have turkey or ham. Do not judge. This is our table. I'm not condemning your turkey tofu substitute. Hope you enjoy all the protein coming to your table.
  • There are a variety of side dishes from mashed potatoes (whipped cream), sweet potatoes, and cornbread dressing. However, my all time favorite came by accident when my wife overheard me raving about a cranberry orange compote we had for a year. She now makes real cranberry compote for the cornbread dressing. No. I don't eat the jelly in the can if I can avoid it.
  • That pretty much covers that.
I've never come across the insurance policy that conjures up visions of a meal that friends and family really enjoyed, much like a Thanksgiving meal. Again, I can't put gravy on my insurance policy and eat it. No amount of cranberry compote makes an HO-3 delicious.

No one remembers an insurance policy 10 years later.

Thanksgiving offers deeply rooted memories. These are not just memories that you remember, but you feel them. They come back to you and the emotion of the day accompanies them.

I remember Thanksgiving I spent in Bosnia and a few others like it. The military did a fantastic job making a restaurant look festive and the food was everywhere. It was good to eat and laugh with friends and compatriots. I still remember the feeling we all had. There were a few people we wish we could see. We enjoyed the food and the company, but neither of us wanted to trade this meal for a home cooked family meal.

There are others whose memories come back with a flood of emotions. Thanksgiving is a time when family reconnects. Sometimes there are people you wish you were there. Sometimes there is an empty seat for someone who is not coming back. Sometimes there is a family ritual that will take you back 20, 30 or more years.

I have read many insurance policies in my day and none caused such a reaction. I don't have a company car policy and I laughed as I read it in my office there are two jobs. I'm not going to take the old versions of politics back and think back to the good old days, when they were so simple. I read them. I study them. I'm trying to remember how they work. They don't change my life.

Insurance policies are good things in context, but not as good as sitting around the table with friends and family, putting aside all the business of the year, putting your differences aside and lift a fork, a spoon or a glass and wish each other the best for the coming year.

May you and yours have a wonderful, blessed, and memorable Thanksgiving.
